是“生物适应环境”还是“环境适应生物”?杜威的真正意思是什么?

In Dewey's Democracy and Education (Chapter 1),there's a passage:

Reproduction of other forms of life goes on in continuous sequence. And though, as the geological record shows, not merely individuals but also species die out, the life process continues in increasingly complex forms. As some species die out, forms better adapted to utilize the obstacles against which they struggled in vain come into being. Continuity of life means continual readaptation of the environment to the needs of living organisms.

其他形式的生命的繁殖不断地进行着。虽然,正如地质学的记录表明,不仅生物个体而且物种都会消灭,但生命过程却以越来越复杂的形式继续下去。当一些物种面对障碍徒劳挣扎以至灭绝时,能更好地利用这些障碍的生命形式应运而生。生命的延续意味着环境的不断更新,以适应生物体的需要。

My question:

We are used to talking about “the adaptation of the organism to the environment”, but here ,the last of the passage, " readaptation of the environment to the needs of living organisms”, what's the real meaning of Dewey? Does it logically right?

Answer1 :I think it’s just a general statement that as species (of all types of life forms) constantly change, so the environment constantly changes to accommodate them. In effect, it works both ways – the environment and its occupants adapt to each other.

A2:You are right about the normal use of the phrase. However, a significant part of the book (from reading the first chapter) is the develoment of civilzation and society anf the concept that the social environment needs to change as populations increase and society become more complex.

A3I think you are right. This is a novel way to talk about biological evolution. So novel that it seems like an error. Taken literally the sentence certainly seems to say, “the environment changes to meet the needs of living things”.
But as the environment is inert and changes only in response to physical forces like entropy, and is not subject to evolution which relies on DNA, the whole sentence seems wrong.

  •  If it were simply a re-statement of the principle of evolution, it would not contain the word "needs", so I don't think it is an error in writing or printing.

  • We are all in agreement now that with “evironment” read in the context of a social rather than a physical environment the author’s sentence about that environment adapting in response to living organisms makes perfect sense.
