唐娜•斯特里克兰(Donna Strickland)获奖是运气还是实力

唐娜•斯特里克兰(Donna Strickland)是2018年诺贝尔物理学奖获得者之一,是自 1963 年以来第一位获得诺贝尔物理学奖的女性。也是自1901年诺贝尔物理学奖颁奖以来,第三位获奖的女物理学家。另外两位女物理学家是Marie Curie和Maria Goeppert-Mayer,分别于1903年和1963年获得诺贝尔物理学奖。对于唐娜•斯特里克兰获奖,有不同的看法。中国科学院物理研究所研究员常国庆从事飞秒激光研究,其导师是Gérard Mourou(2018年诺贝尔物理学奖得主之一)的学生,与唐娜•斯特里克兰是同期的同学。
唐娜•斯特里克兰的获奖实验,并非是她的主意,而是同一个实验室的Steve Williams的想法。是因为Steve Williams不在实验室。
“Gérard Mourou看实验室里还有个女同学在(这个女同学就是唐娜•斯特里克兰),就让她去调一下。这个实验非常简单,随便谁都能做出来。”常国庆说,“做完后,Gérard Mourou可能也没有意识到这么重要,把结果发在《光学通信》(Optics Communications)这本杂志上——D Strickland, G Mourou. Compression of amplified chirped optical pulses. Optics Communications, 1985, 55(6): 447-449.这本杂志唯一的好处就是发表快。”
因为这篇文章,Gérard Mourou荣获了2018年的物理诺奖,另一位作者就是那位留在实验室,操作调试实验的学生——唐娜•斯特里克兰。文章的最后一段专门感谢了Steve Williams。
“除了这篇文章,唐娜•斯特里克兰(Donna Strickland)后来没有做过任何重要工作,一丝丝都没有。”常国庆说,“在我看来,她的贡献不能跟Gérard Mourou相提并论。”
后来唐娜•斯特里克兰还凭此当选过美国光学会的主席。常国庆说:“我只能说,Donna Strickland非常非常幸运。要说跟居里夫人并列,实在谈不上。”
常国庆告诉科技日报记者,他曾与Steve Williams合作,这件事是Steve Williams告诉他的。常国庆也曾经向导师求证,导师说的,与Steve Williams一模一样。对此,在2019年诺贝尔物理学奖即将揭晓之际,我们看看唐娜•斯特里克兰的高引论文,或许有助于我们对于常国庆研究员质疑的理解。
