此前星族合成相关研究中人们普遍认为无法通过颜色确定星族的年龄和金属丰度，本篇论文介绍了通过颜色确定星族年龄和金属丰度的潜力，研究结果表明 (B − K), (R − K), (I − H), (B − V ), (U − R), (R − I)等颜色可以解除部分年龄-金属丰度简并，可以应用到星系的星族研究中，这是人们对无光谱数据的星系进行星族研究的重要手段。

特点：给出了两种颜色系统的研究，ugriz系统和UBVRIJHK系统；可用测定遥远星系的金属丰度和年龄。

We try to find colors that can potentiallybe used to determine the age and metallicity of stellar populations by thestandard model. The model supplies us with both UBVRIJHK-kind and ugriz colorsthat are compared to observations from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) andgalactic clusters.We can use colors for such work because they are easier toget than spectra and are independent of the distances of objects. As a result,some colors such as (B − K), (R − K), (I − H), (B − V ), (U − R), (R − I), arefound to have the ability to break the stellar age-metallicity degeneracypartially and can possibly be used for studying stellar populations ofgalaxies.

Using a widely used stellar-populationsynthesis model, we study the possibility of using pairs of AB system coloursto break the well-known stellar age–metallicity degeneracy and to giveconstraints on two luminosity-weighted stellar-population parameters (age andmetallicity). Our results suggest that a few pairs of colours can be used toconstrain the above two stellar-population parameters. The model provides uswith magnitudes and colours on both Johnson–Cousins–Glass (UBVRIJHKLM bands)and AB (ugriz bands) systems.This will be very useful for exploring the stellarpopulations of distant galaxies.

We have investigated the correlationsbetween absorption line indices and ugriz colours using observational datarelating to SDSS and a widely used stellar population model. In conclusion, Someimportant absorption line indices of early-type galaxies can be estimated fromtheir colours using correlations between absorption line indices and colours.For example, age-sensitive absorption line indices can be estimated from (u-r)or (g-r) colours and metallicity-sensitive ones from (u-z) or (g-z). This isuseful for studying the stellar populations of distant galaxies, especially forstatistical investigations.

本文通过SDSS的数据研究了8个星系参数间的相关性。结果表明，第一主成分可作为划分星系星系类别的重要指标，不同星系的主导参数也不同。恒星年龄并不是红星系的主导参数，但是恒星年龄和质量都是蓝星系的主导参数。

我们使用了八种不同的模型对NGC1651的特殊颜色-星等图进行了研究，结果表明使用同时包含双星、恒星转动和年龄弥散的模型可以得到最好的拟合结果。单独采用双星和年龄弥散、转动和双星的模型也能解释NGC1651的特殊颜色-星等图结构。因此，通过颜色-星等图无法完全确定NGC 1651星团的星族类型。我们建议科学家们使用考虑了双星、转动和恒星形成历史的新型星族合成模型进行颜色-星等图研究。
