美国地质学家和古植物学家Aureal Theophilus Cross (1916--2013)

Aureal Theophilus Cross (1916--2013)是美国当代非常有名的地质学家和古植物学家。1916年6月4日，A. T. Cross出生于俄亥俄州的Hancock县，但在爱荷华州Waterloo市的一个奶牛场长大。本期《古植物学的故事》简要介绍A. T. Cross的教育背景、职业生涯以及与中国的学术联系。

一、教育背景

         1939年，A. T. Cross从位于爱荷华州Cedar Rapids市的Coe College毕业(http://www.coe.edu)，获得学士学位，其学位论文研究孢粉分析。之后，A. T. Cross到辛辛那提大学（University of Cincinnati）植物系跟随古植物学家与古孢粉学家John Hobart Hoskins（1896---1957）学习，主要研究煤核（coal balls）。

二、职业生涯

1942—1949年，A. T. Cross曾在Notre Dame 大学（University of Notre Dame）、辛辛那提大学地质系、俄亥俄州地质调查局（Ohio Geological Survey）工作。

1949—1957年，A. T. Cross同时在西弗吉尼亚大学（West Virginia University）地质系和西弗吉尼亚地质与经济调查局（West Virginia Geologic and Economic Survey）工作，在此期间开展研究并培养研究生。其中硕士研究生包括Ralph J. Gray, Gilbert E. Smith, Ruby H. Benzel, James C. Warman, Phillip N. Shockey及George H. Denton；博士研究生包括Norman Schapiro, Mart P. Schemel及William H. Gillespie。

1957—1961年，A. T. Cross在俄克拉荷马州（Oklahoma）的一家石油公司研究中心工作，主要建立并负责一个孢粉研究组的工作。

自1961年起，A. T. Cross从企业界返回学术界，他开始供职于密歇根州立大学植物生物系（Michigan State University in East Lansing）工作，直到1986年退休。A. T. Cross全面开展北美地区的古植物学、古孢粉学、生物地层学及古生态学等研究工作，培养了很多学生，如：William D. Tidwell, Dennis M. Melia, Abolfazl Jameossanie, Loretta S. Satchell, Martin A. Bordner, Bing-cheng Feng, Debra A. Dufek, Mohammad Ghavidel-Syooki, Myung S. Yi, Richard W. Carroll, Lanny H. Fisk及Patrick F. Fields。.

三、与中国的联系

1979年，中国古植物学家徐仁先生（1910--1992）和李星学先生（1917---2010）随中国植物学会代表团访问美国若干学术机构。后来，徐仁先生回忆，他在美国见到过A. T. Cross等美国同行。

1982年，曾跟随徐仁先生完成硕士学位的冯秉诚（Bing-cheng Feng）赴密歇根州立大学A. T. Cross实验室学习。1987年，冯秉诚获得博士学位。他是在美国专门从事古植物学研究并获得博士学位的第一位中国留学生。

1985年，A. T. Cross教授携太太Christina Aleen Cross (Teyssier)访问中国。徐仁先生及其同仁在北京接待了A. T. Cross教授的访问，并开展学术交流。。
