The Little Hero of Holland是一个在荷兰家喻户晓的小英雄的故事:乡村小男孩彼得的爷爷是修建堤坝倡导人,爸爸管水闸, 叔叔负责堤坝巡视,他从小比别人明白守护堤坝安全的重要。

一篇网络文章煞有介事地说:“Hans Brinker is known as the boy who stuck his finger in the dike when a flood threatened, and thus kept the water back. This is a basic misunderstanding: this is the legend described in the book, but in reality it is about Peter, the lockkeeper's son.”(不是Hans Brinker,堵洞者是真实的Peter)(http://lidy.obbyspage.id.au/hansbrinker.html)

2017年一篇报道的标题是“为什么荷兰小孩子永远也不会把手指放在堤坝上(隐指用手去堵洞)?”(Why the Little Dutch Boy Never Put his Finger in the Dike,https://www.dutchgenealogy.nl/why-the-little-dutch-boy-never-put-his-finger-in-the-dike/)。

发表于Water History期刊的一篇学术研究论文《The story of the Dutch boy who prevented a flooding disaster: origin and variations on the theme》详尽地分析了法国作者虚构的童话与美国作者的转述及在全球广泛的翻译与传播(https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s12685-019-00237-0)。

The story of the Dutch boy who prevented a flooding disaster: origin and variations on the theme

      Bart Schultz 刊登于Water History,December 2019, Volume 11, Issue 3–4

The tale of the boy who is said to have prevented a flooding by putting his finger in a hole of the (Spaarndammer) dike in the Netherlands, is well known all over the world. However, little is known about the origin of the story or about the wide range of variations that have been published and are still being published. This paper argues that the French author of children tales Rébecca Eugénie Rodrigues-Henriques (1796–1852) published the first version of the story under the pseudonym Eugénie Foa in French, with the title Le petit éclusier, “the little sluicer”. However, the story has been made famous by the American author Mary (Elisabeth) Mapes Dodge, who included the tale in her book Hans Brinker, or The silver skates. A story of life in Holland. The paper shows as well that this remarkable tale has found its way into a huge amount of books and other forms of information transfer in at least thirty-five languages. In more or less chronological order, this history will be described, focusing on how and in what variations the story has arisen, been retold and what significance we can assign to all the story variants.

Why the Little Dutch Boy Never Put his Finger in the Dike

30 JUNE 2017 BY YVETTE HOITINK

He is probably the most famous Dutch boy that never lived. The Little Dutch boy who saved the day by putting his finger in a dike.

The book in which he appeared, Hans Brinker; or, the Silver Skates: A Story of Life in Holland, featured several stories. The story about the Little Dutch Boy told how he saved Haarlem from flooding by putting his finger in the dike. Another story about Hans Brinker was about a boy who wanted to win silver skates. Some people think Hans Brinker was the Little Dutch Boy, but these are two separate stories.

The story about Hans Brinker and the Little Dutch Boy who put his finger in the dike were created by American author Mary Mapes Dodge and not based on any actual Dutch folk heros. Since the book’s publication in 1865, the Little Dutch Boy has become part of American pop culture even though most Dutch people have never heard about him.

But there’s another twist to the story. Not even the Little Dutch Boy could have saved the town.

You see, when a dike is about to break, a finger just does not cut it. Dikes don’t typically leak—they weaken until whole sections are washed away. No finger will help when that happens.

So what is a hero supposed to do?

You don’t use a finger, you use a boat.

LESSON 44 The brave little hollander

In some parts of Holland1 the land lies so low, that the people have to build great walls of sand and earth, to keep out the sea.

These walls are called dykes2.

Sometimes the waves break down these walls, and then the sea rushes in through the breach3, and spreads over the land.

Houses and trees, cattle4 and sheep, have thus been washed away, and many people drowned.

Once, when a little boy was going home in the evening, he saw a hole in one of the dykes, through which the water was trickling5.

His father had often told him that when this happened, unless the water was stopped it would soon make the hole so big that the sea would flow over the land.

At first, he thought he would run home and tell his father. But then he said to himself,

"It may be dark before father can come, and we shall not be able to find the hole again.

Or it may get so large that it will be too late to stop it. I must stay now, and do the best I can alone."

The brave little boy sat down, and put his hand in the hole, to keep back the water.

There he stayed, hour after hour, in the cold and the dark, all through the night!

In the morning, a man came past and saw him. He could not think what the boy was doing there. So he called out to him,— 早晨有个人经过,发现了他。

"What are you doing there, my boy?"

"There is a hole in the dyke," said the boy, "and I am keeping back the water."

Poor little boy! he was so cold and tired that he could scarcely6 speak.

The man came quickly and set him free.

He got the hole closed up, and thus the land was saved,—thanks to the brave little Hollander!
