The mission of the Department is to promote the development of biostatistical science at Peking University, to develop new statistical methodology and the application of biostatistical methodology in the fields of medicine and public health.

The School of Public Health was set up in 1950 by the name of Public Health Office of the Peking University (PKU) Medical School.  Over the past 60 years, the school has grown from an office of fewer than ten staff members to a leading public health school in China that boasts 167 faculty members (including 42 professors, 42 associate professors and 30 doctoral supervisors), 960 students (including 103 doctoral candidates, 254 Master's degree candidates, 201 MPH candidates and 402 undergraduates) and a full range of disciplines. Its alumni are found all over the world playing major roles in preventive medicine, public health, health management and medical education.

School of Mathematical Science of Peking University established the first national probabilistic statistics teaching and research section in 1956. Based on probabilistic statistics teaching and research section of Department of Mathematics, Department of probabilistic statistics of Peking University was established in September 1985 and Professor Chen Jiading was the dean of the Department.
