Over 70% of the UK’s low voltage (LV or 415V) distribution networks suffer from observable degree of three-phase imbalance. Causes for this issue include: 1) the uneven allocation of loads across the three phases; 2) asymmetrical network structures; and 3) the emergence of low carbon technologies with random behaviours. Such an imbalance is a major contributor to the 6% energy losses in the UK’s electric power systems, translating to a loss up to hundreds of millions of pounds each year. It also causes network investment costs to rise by at least 20% or billions of pounds each year, due to inefficient uses of network assets (K. Ma, et al., "Quantification of Additional Asset Reinforcement Cost From 3-Phase Imbalance," Power Systems, IEEE Transactions on, vol. PP, pp. 1-7, 2015). To address the three-phase imbalance problem, it is essential to first understand its causes and consequences, which will then form the core evidences for developing mitigation strategies.

Therefore, a potential applicant will be embarking on a cutting-edge research topic that aims to:

1) Understand the nature of three-phase imbalance from individual LV networks to a whole system level.

2) Understand the technical-economic impacts of three-phase imbalance, including the impacts on energy losses and network investment costs.

3) Understand how emerging low carbon technologies will affect three-phase imbalance.

4) Develop mitigating strategies that offer the most economic and practical solution to rebalance the system.


The research output will be of direct use for the industry, especially for distribution network operators (DNO) in helping them to understand the nature of three-phase imbalance throughout their business areas and to make strategic decisions to rebalance three-phase supplies. Therefore, the research will not only be of a cutting-edge nature from an academic perspective, but also bring practical values for the industry as well as the society as a whole.

The successful applicant will have:

1. Real passion in und**aking innovative research which is brain-struggling, stressful and sometimes lonely. The supervisor will support you to the best, but he will not have all the answers. You will not have an attitude such as ‘I just want to get a PhD degree to polish my CV with no real interest in research’.

2. Creativity: you will be giving examples of your creativity.

3. Good numerical skills.

4. Programming proficiency with Matlab. Funding Notes

Home/EU awards cover tuition fees, a training support fee of £1,000/annum, and a standard tax-free maintenance payment of at least £14,296 (16/7 rate) for a duration of 3-3.5 years. Overseas awards (3 years): Provides tuition fee, £1000 per year Training Support Grant, but no stipend.
Successful applicants will ideally have graduated (or be due to graduate) with an undergraduate Masters first class degree and/or MSc distinction (or overseas equivalent).
Any English language requirements must be met at the time of application to be considered for funding.
